About this collection

The Somerville and Ross Manuscripts can be accessed by completing a permission to access form available from Special Collections & Archives.

A World Cat. account is also required, this can be easily created through the following link: www.worldcat.org

The manuscripts consist of a significant collection of personal and literary papers of Edith Somerville (1858-1949) and Violet Martin (1862-1915) alias "Somerville and Ross", one of Ireland's most celebrated literary partnerships.

Available to view on this site is a series of correspondence between Edith Somerville and the English composer and feminist, Dame Ethel Smyth (c. 1918-44). The writers were intimate friends, highly intelligent and with lively, dominating characters although there is a contrast between the matriarchal existence of Edith Somerville in Ireland and the London life of Ethel Smyth.
